John R. Bates, DVM

John R. Bates, DVM Dr. John Bates has cared for pets at Imperial Animal Hospital since 1973, when he started out as a volunteer at the hospital. He returned in 1983 as a general practitioner and became hospital owner in 1986.

Dr. Bates was born in St. Louis and wanted to be a veterinarian ever since he was six years old (according to his mother). He loves working with pets and finds a great deal of satisfaction in helping pets lead long and healthy lives.

He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and received his Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture in 1978. He went on to attend the University of Missouri Veterinary Teaching Hospital and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. While in veterinary school, Dr. Bates was awarded the American Animal Hospital Association's Student Award for proficiency in both medicine and surgery.

Surgery and ophthalmology are among Dr. Bates' many professional interests. He is certified to provide stem cell therapy via Vet-Stem. He is a member of the board of directors of the Animal Emergency Clinics of St. Louis and also works with REGAP (Retired Greyhounds As Pets), the ACT Now Animal Rescue and Golden Retriever Rescue.

Married to Monica, Imperial Animal Hospital's practice manager, Dr. Bates is the proud father of two adult children, Sarah and Scott. He and Monica share their home with a dog named Buddy, three cats named Elvis, Otis and Frosty, and a pair of doves named PJ and JP. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, swimming, playing racquetball, boating and taking photos.
